Matthew Goh
Conceptualiser
In this page, we share a selection of video explorations conducted by conceptualiser Matthew Goh in Phase 1 of our artistic inquiry inspired by personal responses to different spaces in Singapore.
Here, we present 3 of his movement exploration series inspired by his childhood district of Bishan, the Kranji Countryside and the Joo Koon region. Each of the series are led by personal reflections on what feelings and emotions each space inspires in him.

Bishan Series: 1 - Mark
In his movement studies for Phase 1: XITY inspired by his personal experiences of Bishan, Matthew Goh explores the concept of creating an archive of one's movement through memory, with the newspaper symbolising the repository of childhood memories and one's personal history. Depending on how he moves his arms, the crease of movements and resultant crumples and folds of the newspaper will become the archive of one's movement.

Bishan Series 2: Snail
In his movement studies for Phase 1: XITY inspired by his personal experiences of Bishan, Matthew Goh explores the concept of the individual and his/her home, inspired by how a snail carries its shell on its back, demonstrated using one's fingers and a makeshift paper box to generate movement.

Kranji Countryside Series: 1 - Stress Ball

Kranji Countryside Series: 2 - Discovery
In his movement studies for Phase 1: XITY inspired by the Kranji Countryside, Matthew Goh explores the concept of discovery by tracing a map with one hand on a piece of paper attached to the other hand.
