In this page, we share a selection of video explorations conducted by artist and Company Dancer Stephanie Rae Yoong in Phase 1 of our artistic inquiry inspired by personal responses to different spaces in Singapore. 

 

We present excerpts of Stephanie's movement exploration series inspired by her encounters in HDB estates, selected places in the Bugis and town areas of personal interest, as well as an experiment with building miniature collarbone bridges.

1 - [Lost] @ HDBs

In her movement studies for Phase 1: XITY, Stephanie explores her feelings of being lost in HDB estates by using spools of thread winding around a corkboard of wooden pins.

2 - [Fitting in] @ Parkview Square

In her movement studies for Phase 1: XITY, Stephanie explores the difficulties of fitting in at Parkview Square by confining different parts of her body with a fabric storage box.

4 - [Overwhelmed] @ Funan

In her movement studies for Phase 1: XITY, Stephanie explores her feelings of being overwhelmed at Funan by balancing on a wobble balance board with ball bearings rolling in its grooves.

5 - Collarbone Bridge Experiment

In her movement studies for Phase 1: XITY, Stephanie explores her intrigue and curiosity of the human collarbone as a scaffolding, as well as the human skin's capacity for enduring pain by constructing a makeshift bridge with twine and small wooden clothes pegs across her collarbones.
